What to do if it Rains on the Day of Your Move

Everybody hopes for good weather on the day of their move. Unfortunately, the weather gods don’t always look favorably upon you and sometimes you have to deal with rain on the day you’re moving. It can be a hassle, but it’s nothing detrimental. A few simple steps can be taken to ensure that your move goes smoothly even when the weather is gloomy.

• Park your moving truck as close to your front door as possible. When you’re moving items from your home to the truck, the distance that you have to travel outside will be minimal. This will cut down on the travel time between your house and the truck, ensure that your belongings are exposed to as little rain as possible.

• Back your truck right up to the garage. By doing this, you can completely eliminate the gap between your house and the moving truck. If you have a garage and it’s possible to do it this way, this is the best way to make sure your furniture a nd belongs don’t get soaked.

• Cover your furniture with plastic wrap. First, use a blanket or a pad like you normally would and then put the plastic wrap over the pad. This way the plastic won’t stick your furniture when it gets wet. Cheap plastic drop cloths from paint stores work great for large items. Smaller items can be placed in plastic garbage bags.

• Use a covered truck. If you don’t have much stuff and were planning on using an uncovered trailer for you move, invest in a covered truck. It may cost a little extra money, but it will save you money in the long-run.

• Carry your pets from the car to your new home. There’s nothing worse than having muddy paw prints in your new home as soon as you move in. If you have pets don’t let them walk from the car to the house- carry them. This is especially important on the day that you’re moving because you probably won’t ha ve any barriers set up yet to keep them confined to “safe” areas. To avoid any hassle and to make double share they don’t track mud into your new home, carry them.

• If your furniture does get wet during the move, take care of it right away. Cloth furniture like couches, chairs and mattresses can be dried off with a hair-dryer and wood furniture can be wiped down with a cloth. It’s important to remove water from your furniture right away to prevent water damage and mildew.

• Protect your floors. Buy a roll of resin paper and blue painter’s tape from your local paint store or some place like Home Depot. Roll the paper out on floor and secure it with the tape. Place this paper in all the major traffic area where you or the movers will be walking during the move. As soon as you’re finished with the move make sure you remove the tape to protect the finish. Also, a strip of cheap carpet on the places y ou walk will work too.
